Uyghur organizations have called on President Erdoğan, who will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China, to raise the ongoing Uyghur genocide and human rights violations.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which will be held in Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1, 2025. The bilateral meetings Erdoğan will conduct during the summit carry importance for both regional and international diplomacy.
Uyghur civil society organizations stress that the summit should not remain merely an economic and political platform, but should also serve as an opportunity to raise human rights violations and call for an end to the ongoing genocide in the region.
In this regard, the The International Union of East Turkistan Organizations released a statement urging President Erdoğan to bring the East Turkistan issue onto the summit’s agenda and to convey the continuing human rights violations in the region to the international community.
The statement emphasized that, due to Turkey’s historical, cultural, and spiritual ties, it has been the most important supporter of the East Turkistan cause. It underlined that Uyghur Turks have always been an inseparable part of the Turkish nation.
It also noted that the people of East Turkistan have consistently expected attention and a protective stance from Turkey. For this reason, it was stressed that Turkey must assume a strategic role in bringing the East Turkistan issue onto the global agenda.
The Union of International East Turkistan NGOs further expressed that their expectation from President Erdoğan is for him to be the voice of the people of East Turkistan in all international platforms, including the SCO summit. The statement highlighted that Turkey’s policies centered on justice, brotherhood, and human rights are a major source of hope for East Turkistan’s struggle for freedom.
Finally, it was noted that the steps to be taken under Erdoğan’s leadership will shed light on the future of East Turkistan, stating: “We expect our President to strongly demonstrate his mission of being the protector of the oppressed and the defender of truth and justice on the East Turkistan issue as well.”
