Did Pakistan’s J-10C Jets Shoot Down 5 Indian Fighter Jets? Facts vs. Disinformation

By Mehmet Emin Hazret

Today we dive deep into one of the most talked-about military claims in recent weeks:

Pakistan’s Air Force has reportedly shot down 5 Indian fighter jets — 3 of them Rafales — using Chinese-made J-10C aircraft.

But how much of this is fact, and how much is misinformation? Let’s break it down, step by step

1. Does Pakistan Have J-10C Jets?
Yes. Pakistan began receiving Chinese J-10C fighter jets in 2022. The first six entered service in March 2022, and by 2025, about 20 are estimated to be in active duty.
These jets are seen as a counterbalance to India’s acquisition of French Rafale aircraft.

The J-10C is a 4.5-generation multi-role combat aircraft, equipped with AESA radar and long-range PL-15 air-to-air missiles. With these platforms, Pakistan achieved a new level of parity in air power with India.

2. Were J-10Cs Used Against India?
In May 2025, an aerial skirmish erupted over the Jammu and Kashmir region.
Pakistan confirmed that its J-10C jets were used in active combat for the first time.

According to Pakistani authorities, five Indian jets were shot down in this engagement:

3 Rafales

1 MiG-29

1 Su-30MKI

3. Were 5 Indian Jets Really Shot Down?
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister claimed in parliament that 5 Indian jets, including 3 Rafales, were downed — and added that they could’ve taken down more if needed.
If accurate, this would mark a major milestone for J-10C jets in modern aerial warfare.

But how much of it is verifiable?

4. Was a Rafale Jet Actually Downed?
According to French intelligence sources cited by CNN, at least one Rafale fighter was confirmed to have been shot down by Pakistan.
This would be the first combat loss of a Rafale jet in the world.

Additionally, debris from a Rafale aircraft with tail number BS-001 was found in India’s Punjab region, lending further weight to the claim.

5. What About the Other 4 Jets?
France officially stated that only one aircraft loss is under investigation.
Claims about a second and third Rafale remain unverified.
As for the MiG-29 and Su-30MKI, India has not acknowledged any losses.

India has outright denied losing any jets, accusing Pakistan of spreading disinformation.

6. What Does the International Media Say?
Sources like South China Morning Post, The Aviationist, and CNN have all reported that at least one Rafale jet may have been shot down.
But there is no concrete evidence yet for the remaining four aircraft.

This strongly suggests that both sides are engaged in an active information war.

Conclusion:
Based on verified reports:

Pakistan actively uses J-10C jets.
In May 2025, these jets engaged Indian aircraft.
At least one Rafale was almost certainly shot down.
The claims about four additional Indian aircraft being downed remain unconfirmed.

In conflicts like this, disinformation is rampant.
That’s why it’s essential to rely on official statements, independent media reports, and physical evidence.
