Uyghur awareness events draw significant support in Gifu, Japan

The Japan Uyghur Association held exhibitions, street campaigns, and a lecture in Gifu, Japan, to raise awareness of the Uyghur genocide by China, drawing strong support from citizens and local lawmakers.

On August 30–31, 2025, the Japan Uyghur Association organized a series of impactful events in Gifu Prefecture to raise awareness about the ongoing plight of the Uyghur people in China. These activities, which included a panel exhibition, street campaigns, and a major lecture, took place amid growing international concern over reported human rights abuses in East Turkistan (Xinjiang).

At the center of the initiative was a lecture held in Nakatsugawa City, attended by approximately 100 individuals, with a significant number of city council members present. the Japan Uyghur Association expressed gratitude to Uyghur Parliamentarian League Chairman Keiji Furuya and other contributors for their support.

In addition to the lecture, a street campaign was held at Tajimi Station, where several local legislators joined to demonstrate solidarity. The event featured banners with messages such as “Stop the repression of Uyghurs! Stop the genocide!” and “3 million wrongful convictions against Uyghurs”. Informational materials were also distributed, alongside additional signs repeating the urgent call to end the repression and genocide.

A photo exhibition further complemented the initiative, offering visitors the opportunity to engage with detailed panels on Uyghur culture as well as the ongoing persecution. The Japan Uyghur Association documented the exhibition through posts highlighting both the cultural heritage and the repression faced by the Uyghurs.

Taken together, these events highlight the association’s ongoing efforts to mobilize local support and raise awareness of the mass internment of Uyghurs in so-called “vocational training centers,” a policy widely condemned as part of a broader campaign of repression and cultural erasure by the Chinese Communist Party. The participation of both local politicians and citizens in Gifu reflects the growing movement in Japan to demand justice and accountability for the Uyghur people.
