Ahmedjan Kasim elected president of the Dutch Uyghur Human Rights Foundation

Ahmedjan Kasim was elected president of the Dutch Uyghur Human Rights Foundation marking a new generation of leadership within the Uyghur diaspora.

The Dutch Uyghur Human Rights Foundation held its presidential election on July 1, 2025. Ahmedjan Kasim was elected as the new president of the Foundation. Mr. Kasim is known as one of the most promising third-generation Uyghur leaders in the diaspora.

Born in East Turkistan in 1996, Mr. Kasim fled Chinese repression at the age of 15, following his mother to the Netherlands, where he rebuilt his life while remaining deeply committed to the Uyghur struggle.

A New Chapter for Uyghur Advocacy in Europe

The Foundation emphasized that Mr. Kasim’s leadership signals a new era of proactive engagement and deeper connection between the Uyghur diaspora in Europe and the international human rights community. In their official statement, the Foundation noted:

“Mr. Kasim has demonstrated unwavering commitment to justice, human rights, and the Uyghur cause. His election marks a new chapter in the Foundation’s ongoing work to advocate for the rights and dignity of the Uyghur people. We are confident that his vision, integrity, and leadership will guide the organization toward continued growth and impact.”

“Our Movement Will Depend on Such Talents”

Speaking to Uygur News on Mr. Kasim’s election, veteran Uyghur activist and founder of the Ilham Tohti Initiative, Enver Can, stated:

“I congratulate Mr. Ehmetjan Kasim as the new President of the Dutch Uyghur Human Rights Foundation. He is one of the most talented third-generation young Uyghur leaders in the diaspora. Our movement will depend on such talents for its future.”

Renewed Commitment to Uyghur Rights Under New Leadership

Under Mr. Kasim’s presidency, the Foundation plans to expand its outreach both within the Netherlands and across Europe, intensifying its efforts to bring international attention to the crimes against humanity being committed in East Turkistan and to amplify the voices of Uyghur survivors and families.

The Dutch Uyghur Human Rights Foundation invites supporters, partners, and the international community to join them in this renewed commitment to justice, freedom, and the defense of Uyghur identity and dignity.

“The Uyghur Dream: Struggle Against Chinese Oppression”

In his Dutch-language memoir, De Oeigoerse droom: Mijn strijd tegen Chinese onderdrukking (The Uyghur Dream: Struggle Against Chinese Oppression), he recounts his personal journey and the broader plight of the Uyghur people. The book documents how East Turkistan—homeland of the Uyghurs—was incorporated into the People’s Republic of China in 1949 through geopolitical arrangements between the Soviet Union and China, and how the region later became the site of a vast campaign of cultural erasure, surveillance, and internment.
