Another Uyghur Detained and Forcibly Disappeared

Mehray Memet, a Uyghur woman who had previously visited Turkey, was detained four years ago, and since there is no news about her whereabouts. She was taken from her home in Urumqi by Chinese security forces.

According to Uyghur activist Abduweli Ayup, Mehray Memet, who lived in Ürümqi, East Turkistan, was detained and taken from her home by Chinese State Security Police on November 17, 2021. Since then, there has been no information about her whereabouts and health conditions.

When detained, Mehray Memet was 31 years old and left behind two children, aged 3 and 5. Their current condition and whereabouts remain unknown.

Mehray, a medical University graduate, had visited Turkey in 2014. It is believed that her visit to Turkey may have been the reason for her enforced disappearance.

Many Muslim-majority countries, including Turkey, are considered by the Chinese government to be “objectionable” countries for Uyghurs. There have been frequent reports about how China closely monitors Uyghurs who live, travel to or communicate with these countries, and cases of transnational repression against them.

Mr. Enver Can a veteran diaspora Uyghur activist, pointing out, Mehray is not the only one who is victim of the Chinese policy of suppression and intimidation against the Uyghur people, says, “China have been trying to silence Uyghurs who traveled, lived or studied abroad for many years as part of its atrocity crimes“.
