The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China has called on the Thai Government to refrain from deporting 48 Uyghurs to China and to allow them safe passage to a third country.
Following the increased risk of 48 Uyghurs being deported from Thailand to China, The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), a coalition of parliamentarians from democratic countries focusing on relations with China, released a statement on January 19, 2025, titled On Reports of the Imminent Deportation of Uyghur from Thailand to China.
Deportation Will Harm Thailand’s International Standing and Relations
The IPAC statement read: “If the Thai Government refouges 48 Uyghur detainees to China, in clear violation of their obligations under international law, it will have a major impact on the way Thailand is regarded in the international community, and will negatively affect all dimensions of bilateral and multilateral relations. We urge the Thai Government to allow those detained safe passage to a third country without delay.”
Call to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
Following a report by The New York Times in November, which highlighted that the 48 Uyghurs, imprisoned in Thailand for over a decade after fleeing persecution in China, face grave danger, IPAC made a call with the signatures of more than 50 lawmakers from 26 parliaments worldwide, urging immediate intervention to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi.
