On Labour Day, the Indian Uyghur Society denounced China’s use of forced labour against Uyghurs and urged international action to end this ongoing human rights abuse.
As the world marks International Labour Day in recognition of workers’ rights and dignity, on May 1, 2025, the Indian Uyghur Society has issued a statement condemning the ongoing forced labour practices targeting Uyghurs in East Turkistan under the Chinese Communist Party’s rule.
In their message, the Society emphasized that while millions celebrate the progress of labour movements globally, countless Uyghur men and women are subjected to involuntary labour in factories and camps, stripped of their fundamental rights and freedoms. The Society called for immediate international attention and action to end what it described as an “atrocity” against Uyghur workers.
The statement by the Indian Uyghur Society included the following: “On this International Labour Day, while the world celebrates workers’ rights, we cannot ignore the horrific reality of forced labour endured by Uyghurs in East Turkistan under the Chinese Communist Party. Their dignity is being stolen. Their rights are non-existent. We demand an end to this atrocity.“
The Indian Uyghur Society was established in India in September 2024 to carry out programs and cultural activities to support the Uyghur community in India and raise awareness among the Indian public about the oppression Uyghurs face from the Chinese government. Since then, under the leadership of Wasim Abdullah, a Uyghur living in India, the Indian Uyghur Society has been carrying out various activities in line with this mission.
