Seminar on the Uyghur Crisis and Islamophobia in China Held in Indonesia

An international seminar in Indonesia addressed the Uyghur crisis and Islamophobia in China, calling for Muslim unity and global action against ongoing human rights violations.

On May 5, 2025, the Center for Uyghur Studies co-organized an international seminar titled “Human Atrocities and Human Rights Violations Amid Islamophobia: The Uyghur Crisis” at the Nusantara Muslim University of Al Washliyah (UMN) in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. H. M. Jamil, M.A., Rector of UMN, offered opening remarks, urging stronger unity among Muslims and drawing parallels between the suffering of the Uyghur people and other oppressed communities. He was followed by Astrid Nadya Rizqita, President of OIC Youth Indonesia, who emphasized the importance of global Muslim solidarity with the Uyghurs.

The panel featured Abdulhakim Idris, Executive Director of the Center for Uyghur Studies; Prof. Dr. Hasan Asari, Lecturer at UIN Sumatera Utara; and Dr. Nelvitia Purba, Lecturer at UMN.

Abdulhakim Idris delivered an overview of the Uyghur genocide and China’s campaign against Islam. He also detailed the current situation in East Turkistan, underscoring the urgent need for international solidarity.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Asari examined the roots of Islamophobia and provided a critical analysis of China’s religious repression targeting Uyghur Muslims. Dr. Nelvitia Purba shared insights into broader patterns of Islamophobia and their intersection with the Uyghur crisis.

The seminar concluded with remarks by Dr. H. Masyhuril Khamis, S.H., M.M., Chairman of Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah, who expressed strong solidarity with the Uyghur people and called on students to learn about their plight and advocate for their rights.

The event was attended by more than 100 students and faculty members, who actively participated in the discussions and expressed their support for the Uyghur cause.
