Turkish MP Ertuğrul Kaya brought the humanitarian crisis of Uyghurs to the agenda in the Turkish Parliament. Kaya: “We must stand with the Uyghurs just as we stand with other oppressed peoples. This is a humanitarian duty.”
Turkiye DEVA Party MP Ertuğrul Kaya made assessments about the genocide against Uyghurs in East Turkistan and Turkey’s stance, the government’s failure in economic policies, and the low minimum wage during a press conference he held in the Turkish Grand National Assembly on December 26, 2024.
In his speech about the Uyghurs, Kaya condemned China’s oppression of Uyghurs, saying, “We have a wound in our chest, its name is East Turkistan. This wound is soaked with the blood of Uyghur Turks, washed with tears, the wound of our kinsmen held captive in their own homeland.” Kaya criticized the detention of Uyghurs under the name of “re-education camps,” saying, “These people were torn from their loved ones without committing any crime, just because they are Uyghur and Muslim. This hurts not just the conscience of a nation, but the conscience of humanity.“
FREEDOM FOR THE UYGHUR TURKS
While demanding freedom for Uyghurs, Kaya called for the same hospitality shown to Syrians to be shown to Uyghurs. “We absolutely do not accept that while we open our doors to Syrians, we do not protect our own relatives, the Uyghur Turks. There are claims that Uyghurs fleeing genocide are being handed over to China. We will ask about these to the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Justice. If these claims are true, handing over the oppressed to the oppressor, especially your own kin, carries a very heavy burden before Allah,” he said. Kaya, who called for the same support shown to Palestinians to be shown to Uyghurs, added, “We must stand with the Uyghur Turks just as we stand with the Palestinians. This is a humanitarian duty for me.“
WE MUST BECOME THE VOICE OF THE UYGHURS
Stating that the voices of Uyghurs must be heard, Kaya said, “Uyghur Turks must be free! I demand from the Chinese government respect for the human rights of Uyghur Turks and their ability to freely practice their beliefs. This is not just a struggle to protect the dignity of a nation, but the dignity of humanity. The cry of Uyghur Turks is our cry; their pain is our pain.“
