Uyghur delegation meets with Turkish political leaders

A delegation from the Platform of Uyghur Organizations in Turkey held a series of meetings with political party leaders and members of parliament to draw attention to the ongoing Uyghur genocide and to seek avenues for constructive solutions.

On June 25, 2025, the delegation met with several political figures in Turkey known for their continued support of Uyghur rights, including Dr. Fatih Erbakan, Chairman of the New Welfare Party (YRP); Mustafa Destici, Chairman of the Great Unity Party (BBP); Mustafa Kaya, Member of Parliament from the Felicity Party (SP); and Associate Professor Dr. Selçuk Özdağ, Member of Parliament from the Future Party. The discussions focused on the current situation in East Turkistan and explored opportunities for future cooperation.

Meeting with the New Welfare Party

During the meeting with YRP Chairman Dr. Erbakan, the delegation conveyed the ongoing persecution faced by the Uyghur people and discussed potential areas of future collaboration. Dr. Erbakan reaffirmed his commitment to raising the East Turkistan issue in both Turkey and the broader Islamic world and pledged to continue efforts to end China’s oppression in the region.

Abdureşit Abdulhamid, President of the Platform and also of the World Uyghur Congress Foundation, emphasized the need to urge the Turkish government to take concrete steps to resolve the problems faced by Uyghurs residing in Turkey. He presented Dr. Erbakan with a letter outlining the delegation’s key demands. In addition, the delegation presented reports and books on the internment camps and the genocide in East Turkistan, a map of the region, and a traditional Uyghur doppah.

Meeting with the Great Unity Party

The delegation also attended the BBP’s weekly press conference at party headquarters and met with Chairman Mustafa Destici. In his remarks, Destici reiterated his party’s long-standing support for East Turkistan’s independence and pledged to keep the issue on the agenda in both Turkey and the Islamic world.

A letter of demands was submitted to Destici by Abdureşit Abdulhamid on behalf of the Platform. The letter called on the Turkish government to address issues affecting Uyghurs in Turkey, such as access to citizenship, long-term residency permits, work authorization, and the recognition of academic diplomas. At the conclusion of the meeting, the delegation presented Destici with relevant reports, books, and a map of East Turkistan.

Meetings with Turkish Parliamentarians

The delegation also met with MP Mustafa Kaya of the Felicity Party and MP Associate Professor Dr. Selçuk Özdağ of the Future Party. Both parliamentarians expressed their support for the Uyghur people’s just struggle and pledged to continue raising the East Turkistan issue in the Turkish political sphere.

They affirmed their commitment to doing everything within their capacity to support Uyghurs in their fight against Chinese persecution. On behalf of the Platform, Abdureşit Abdulhamid presented each parliamentarian with a letter outlining the community’s requests, along with reports and books documenting the internment camps and the ongoing genocide.

Through these meetings, the Platform of Uyghur Organizations in Turkey aims to strengthen political support for the East Turkistan cause and to push for solutions to the challenges Uyghurs face in Turkey.
