Uyghur Genocide Highlighted in Three Japanese Cities

The Japan Uyghur Association held a series of events in Oita, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto to draw attention to China’s genocidal policies against the Uyghur people.

From June 20 to 22, the association organized street demonstrations and conferences in the cities of Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Oita to raise awareness of the Uyghur genocide. The events attracted interest from local residents and received support from public figures and volunteers. Informative materials were distributed to participants.

Street demonstrations were held in downtown Nagasaki on June 20 and in Kumamoto on June 21, where the ongoing genocide in East Turkistan was exposed.

The final event took place on June 22 in Oita, featuring street actions in the morning and a conference in the afternoon. The conference, organized with the support of local backers, included a speech by Eto Seichi — a member of Japan’s House of Councillors and the first secretary general of the Uyghur Parliamentary Alliance. The event focused on the human rights violations faced by Uyghurs and the international community’s responsibility to address them.

During the three-day campaign, 1,000 brochures prepared by the Japan Uyghur Association, 1,000 graphic novels portraying internment camp survivor stories, and 100 CDs of Uyghur songs were distributed.

The three cities that hosted the events are all located on Kyushu Island. Speaking to Uygur News about the island and campaign, a representative of the Japan Uyghur Association said:
Kyushu is seen as a key defense area in Japan because of its closeness to China. The Chinese population here continues to grow, which also increases China’s influence. Through these events, we aimed to raise awareness among the people of Kyushu about the atrocities Uyghurs are currently facing, and to explain how this awareness can ultimately benefit Japan as well. We will continue to expand Uyghur-related activities in the Kyushu region.
