Five Uyghurs were caught while passing through Hungary to seek refuge in EU countries and were sent to Serbia and are being detained there. These individuals, who are in danger of being sent back to China, need the support of human rights organizations and Uyghur NGOs.
Haximu Yikeshan, Mevlan, Abdulbasit and two other Uyghur Turks, carrying Chinese passports, reached Hungary on 9 November 2023 to seek refuge in the European Union Countries.
According to the information Haximu Yikeshan gave to Uygur News over the phone, they were detained by Hungarian police while heading from Hungary to Austria and were deported to Serbia.
These Uyghurs, who have been held in the repatriation center together with many Syrians in Serbia for 5 days, were only given the right to make phone calls today, November 14. Yikeshan, who was given the opportunity to speak for only a minute and contacted Uygur News, said that they were informed that he would be detained there for more than 2 months. Yikeshan also stated that the police said they would release him in exchange for some money, but that someone from Serbia had to bring money.
Detained Uyghurs do not know which region of Serbia they are currently in, and they are worried about the possibility of the Serbian government sending them back to China.
