The Canadian government has strongly condemned China’s recent decision to impose sanctions on Canadian Uyghur and Tibetan civil society organizations and human rights advocates.
In a statement released by Global Affairs Canada on December 24, 2024, the government criticized the China’s recent sanctions as an attack on those who speak out for human rights.
“Global Affairs Canada expresses solidarity with the members of the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project and the Canada Tibet Committee and condemns the decision by the Chinese government to punish them for speaking out for human rights,” the statement declared.
The Canadian government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting individuals from threats or harassment linked to their political opinions and emphasized that dissenting voices should not be silenced. The statement also urged China to address credible allegations of human rights violations, as highlighted by multiple UN experts and other international mechanisms.
Global Affairs Canada reiterated its readiness to provide consular assistance to Canadians affected by these developments and called on citizens in China to exercise caution due to the risks of arbitrary enforcement of local laws.
