WUC representatives attending UNHRC 58 in Geneva are drawing attention to China’s ongoing persecution of Uyghurs and violations of their freedom of religion or belief, calling on the UN and OIC to take urgent action.
The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) is actively participating in the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva on March 17, 2025, drawing attention to the ongoing persecution of Uyghurs, particularly Uyghur refugees and violations of their freedom of religion or belief (FoRB).
WUC President Turgunjan Alawudun addressed the council, highlighting the recent deportation of 40 Uyghur exiles from China on February 27, which he denounced as a blatant violation of international law.
“This is happening at a time when millions of Muslims around the world are celebrating Ramadan, yet Uyghurs are deprived of their right to practice their religion,” Alawudun stated. He emphasized that policies of eradication and forced re-education imposed by the Chinese government have resulted in severe abuses, including bans on attending mosques and restrictions on even private prayers.

Alawudun further described the persecution as not only an attack on religious freedom but also on human dignity, identity, and culture. He called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the international community to show greater solidarity with Uyghur Muslims.
In recent years, UN special rapporteurs and mandate holders have repeatedly warned about human rights violations committed against Uyghurs, urging decisive international action. WUC’s intervention at HRC58 aims to keep the crisis on the global agenda and push for stronger responses from the international community.
