240 Uyghurs detained in Urumqi over the past three months

Mass detentions continue: In the past three months, at least 240 Uyghurs have been detained in Urumqi, most of whom had previously traveled to Turkey or owned businesses or property there.

While hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs are imprisoned in Xinjiang under false court decisions, millions of Uyghurs are tortured in concentration kamps and forced to work in labor camps, mass detentions are still ongoing.

According to Uighur researcher, writer and activist Abduweli Ayup, at least 240 Uighurs were detained in Urumqi city between August and October.

Most of them have a background in Turkey

According to Ayup’s source, most of the detained victims had previously visited Turkey or owned businesses, properties and real estate in Turkey.

Among those detained are two young men, Ezimet Ekrem and Irfan Yarmemet. Ekrem, who lived in Turkey between 2014 and 2016, was detained at his home in Ürümqi.

Yarmemet, a Turkish graduate and content producer, was detained in Shanghai on September 2 and is currently being held in the Urumqi Saybagh detention camp. He received a master’s degree in advertising from Ege University in Turkey and graduated in 2017.

He was in Shanghai to avoid detention

Yarmemet, had been living in Shanghai for many years, having left Ürümqi, where mass detentions targeted intellectuals and educated people, especially those who had studied abroad, but he was still a target.

Ayup said in a statement, “Uyghur content producer arrested in Shanghai. Irpan Yarmemet got arrested in September 2024. He is from Urumchi, has been living in Shanghai since 2017 to avoid being detained. He studied in Turkey in 2016, asked to return to China by local police. He is one of 240 Uyghurs arrested in 3 months.
