Man detained in Sweden on suspicion of spying on Uyghurs for China

A man in Sweden has been detained on suspicion of spying on Uyghurs for China, allegedly gathering intelligence on behalf of Chinese security services.

A Swedish court on Wednesday ordered the detention of a man suspected of spying on Uyghurs on behalf of China, Sweden’s Prosecution Authority announced on April 9, 2025.

The authority did not provide further details about the case or clarify whether it involved the small Uyghur community in Sweden or individuals elsewhere. According to court documents, the man is being held in custody in the Swedish capital.

“The man is suspected of having unlawfully gathered information and intelligence on individuals in the Uyghur community on behalf of the Chinese intelligence service,” Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said in a statement earlier on Wednesday.

Rights groups have long accused Beijing of widespread abuses against the Uyghurs, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group from East Turkistan.

In 2022, a landmark United Nations report concluded that China’s “arbitrary and discriminatory detention” of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in East Turkistan may amount to crimes against humanity.
