An attack targeting Chinese nationals took place near an airport in Pakistan, resulting in 3 deaths and 17 injuries.
On October 6, 2024, an attack targeting a convoy of Chinese nationals took place just outside Pakistan’s largest airport, Jinnah International Airport. At least 3 people were killed, and 17 were injured. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group in Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack.
This deadly assault on Chinese citizens in Pakistan comes just a week before the country hosts the China-led Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
The blast has once again highlighted the growing unrest against Chinese influence in Pakistan and the country’s security weaknesses. Among the injured were police officers escorting the Chinese convoy.
In a statement on Monday, the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad urged Pakistan to “take all necessary measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens, institutions, and projects in Pakistan.”
Attacks Against Chinese Nationals on the Rise in Pakistan
Attacks against Chinese nationals have been increasing in Pakistan. The BLA, which claimed responsibility for this incident, also carried out an attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi in 2018.
In March, a suicide bombing killed five Chinese engineers and their Pakistani driver in northwest Pakistan, as they were en route to the Dasu Dam, the country’s largest hydroelectric project.
In July 2021, at least nine Chinese nationals and four Pakistanis working on a dam were killed when a suicide bomber targeted their bus in northwest Pakistan.
